Russian singer along with dozens targeted by Australia sanctions

(MENAFN) Australia has imposed sanctions on Russian pop singer Shaman, alongside 36 other individuals and seven organizations, according to a statement from the Australian Ministry of Foreign Affairs released on Thursday. Among the newly sanctioned are also prominent actor and TV presenter Vyacheslav Manucharov.

Those added to the sanctions list are accused of contributing to Russia’s economic or strategic interests. The measures include travel bans and asset freezes, blocking any financial holdings within Australia.

Other individuals sanctioned include Rustam Minnikhanov, head of the Republic of Tatarstan; Pavel Sorokin, Russia’s First Deputy Energy Minister; media figure Anton Zlatopolsky; journalist Aram Gabrelyanov; and Maria Kiseleva, a three-time Olympic champion in synchronized swimming and Moscow City Duma deputy.

Organizations targeted include Moscow-based semiconductor and nanotech firm Minatekh, the insurance company Soglasie, and Pravfond, a foundation providing legal aid for Russians abroad.

Australian Foreign Minister Penny Wong stated that the sanctions align with efforts by Canberra’s international allies to limit Russia’s capacity to finance its military actions in Ukraine.

Earlier this year, Australia sanctioned 70 individuals and 79 organizations in its largest sanctions package against Russia since the Ukraine conflict escalated in February 2022.

In retaliation, Moscow has imposed travel bans on hundreds of Australian politicians and public figures. Russian officials have repeatedly dismissed such sanctions as illegal and ultimately harmful to the countries imposing them.
