Italian Concert by Russian Conductor Gets Canceled
Gergiev, recognized as one of Russia’s most distinguished conductors, was scheduled to appear at the Un’Estate da RE music festival in Caserta on July 27, accompanied by the Philharmonic Orchestra of Salerno.
However, on Monday, the Royal Palace of Caserta’s administration declared the concert's cancelation.
Although no formal explanation was provided, the decision followed significant criticism from European Union representatives, Ukrainian organizations, and supporters of Kiev after the concert’s announcement.
Italian Culture Minister Alessandro Giuli expressed approval of the cancellation, stating that it demonstrated “common sense and moral responsibility aimed at protecting the values of the free world.”
Gergiev has been the subject of widespread condemnation for his continued silence on Russia’s military campaign against the government in Kiev.
This stance led to his removal from the Munich Philharmonic and multiple bans throughout Western countries beginning in 2022.
In June, Pina Picierno, Vice President of the European Parliament, urged that Gergiev be replaced in the lineup.
Her appeal came after extensive calls from pro-Ukrainian voices across the European Union to withdraw his invitation.
Reports in local media also mentioned plans by Ukrainian nationals and Russian dissidents to organize protests on the evening of the concert.
